Vietnamese Culture Night

The VCN has been an ongoing event celebrated and hosted by the Vietnamese Student Association for the last 16 years. It is an entirely student run show encompassing the club's vision of advocating for the cultural, educational, political, and social welfare of the Vietnamese community at large. VCN occurs every spring after months of preparation by the VSA student body (all voluntarily!) and collectively we take pride in being able to celebrate Vietnamese culture on stage. VCN is a great vehicle and opportunity for students to express their theatrical talents, ambitions, and curiosities. Those who have not danced before can learn to dance. Those who never thought they'd be performing on stage in front of hundreds can leave a lasting mark. There's a place for everyone to perform within VCN with so many ongoing aspects( even the ones that aren't onstage), such as : acting, singing, dancing, spoken word, backstage assistance, coordinating props. This production is the combined efforts of so many students taking the time to express the pride and struggles of the Vietnamese American community on stage.

VCN Director's Message

As this year's 2014-2015 VCN Coordinator, I would like to thank you for being on our page and reading this. My name is Cassie Nguyen, I am a third year at UCSB and have been in each year's production since my freshman year. With each ongoing year of participating in such a large scale, voluntary production I learn more about myself as a Vietnamese American and develop a better sense of balance and connection to my heritage. Even for those of you who aren't particularly Vietnamese American, our show touches upon the qualms of many multi-cultured individuals and can feel a relation to themes in our stories. Our overarching goals are to not only speak for our own community, but to reach out and connect to other communities on a larger scale. My first year, I learned of my capabilities as a performer and entertainer as a supporting actress onstage. I had never once acted in front of so many people, no dared to step so beyond my comfort zone with the amount of acting training and practice I had. Yet, to simply state, it was amazing and a life changing experience for me. My second year, I deeply felt the satisfaction and value of being able to produce a student run production that comprised of the efforts, ambitions, and creative endeavors of so many people our unified goal of putting on a heartfelt, entertaining show. I knew I wanted to play a greater role in reproducing this same magical feeling in others and continue to gauge other's interests in VSA's mission to continue its tradition. This year, I hope you join us in our production of VCN. Our show is open to everyone and we can use all of the help we can get. I am vibrating with excitement to see what will become of our show this year as only time will tell, so join us!
